PK’s Picks #2 – SoundCloud SpotLight !

Hey everyone, it’s your boy PKSkyler back again with another edition of PK’s Picks – a semi regular feature where I sift through a ton of submitted and underground/outsider music to try to find out what YOU need to be peeping!! This week we’ll be doing a bit of a smorgasboard of SoundCloud artists in particular, so let’s dive right in!

DEXTRO by Yung Psyche ( prod. Emune ) Yung Psyche

Very catchy and smooth trap influenced cloud rap-ish song. I probably listened to this song like 10 times this week lol. From the artwork, you might think is some death metal song or some kind of edgy rap song but in reality you’ve got a classic here. Yung Psyche has some chilled out bars and an infectious hook. His bored, zoned out rapping style compliments the retro 80s anime feel of the sample the beat uses as well. My one gripe would be that the song is a tiny bit too short and I bet Yung Psyche has more rap bars and more energy saved up for us for use in another song. Shout outs to Emune and Yung Psyche for making a really nice low key song tho.  definitely would recommend a listen and a download and keeping these guys on your radar.
Final Score : 8/10
Listen to DEXTRO by Yung Psyche ( prod. Emune )

“JOHNCENA ( prod. SBOY)” by Max Wells johncena

Warning, fire inbound~ Max is an MC from Austin, Texas with a mission. This beat is super into that chill trap wave but there’s a great energy being brought to the table. However to be honest there was something about the way the track was mixed and mastered, it has a sort of artificial or robotic tinge to Max’s voice and his bars are already on fire, he doesn’t really need that extra stuff, also his ad libs were a little goofy for me. Coulda did without the “cannot see me john cena” mumbling at the end. All in all though definitely a nice track and am looking forward to the next banger.
Final Score- 7/10
Listen to Max Wells’ song JOHNCENA

“Falling  Leaves” by NISH (KUMO VILLAGE) nish

Nish seems to be a producer from Stow, United states with his own knack for chilled out beats. This song “Falling Leaves” perfectly encapsulates a relaxing feeling into a nice 2 mins of smooth hip hop bliss. This song definitely gave me some Nujabes vibes and him being a super big influence of mine I definitely gravitate to the feeling this song emotes. It’s like you could relax by a river under the shade of the tree all day, without a care in the world. Also digging the somewhat lo fi sound here, gives off a nostalgic feel. Since it’s just an instrumental and it is simple i cant say it’s the best song I’ve ever heard but hey NISH, you’re now on my radar!
Final Score- 8/10
Listen to “Falling Leaves” by NISH ( KUMO VILLAGE)

“Trip ft Space Dolphin (Prod. TOO RAW)” by Johnny Gee johnny-gee

So first time I’m ever hearing any of these guys, forgive me if I mix up who is who. Thing that sticks out the most to me is this amazing instrumental (good shit TOO RAW) and a bit of a funny/upbeat energy and lyrics. I mean to be honest I couldn’t help but smile and laugh with some of the lyrics/adlibs/delivery. I’m not sure if it’s exactly my style but I do see it being a good party song. You can tell these guys don’t give a fuck bout bitches and they got the drugs and guap like that lol…Some of the lines and shit are just too funny for me “by my lonely you don’t know me so just give me face,” “different strains like candy stores, xans ate like candy bars” lol.  Highlights of the song would be the beat- just the way it’s so light, chimey and wavey in the background, the mixing and mastering there was done well- and I liked the verses more than the hook really. Rapping in a charismatic way like that is nice.
Final Score – 7/10
Listen to “Trip ft Space dolphin (PROD. TOO RAW) by Johnny Gee
“Breathing Underwater” by Hiatus Kaiyote hiatus

I have never heard a song by this band until this one and WOW am I pleasantly surprised!! The lead singer of Hiatus Kaiyote, “napalm,” has such a great tone to her voice it accompanies this song perfect. You are gently serenaded by her voice, some light guitar and bubble sounds, until a big explosion of emotion into this sort of jazz fusion style where the guitar becomes played in a more upbeat fashion and even some synths start to make their way into the amalgamation. Midway through the song, if you’re accurately following the gentle waves of highs and lows Hiatus Kaiyote are expressing and if you aren’t getting that feeling of literally floating through the water and breathing it in, I guess it’s just not your style. Some people could say the song could end earlier however I enjoy them drawing it out a bit more for more of a reprise ending. This is some soulful stuff and I’m very interested to hear more!
Final Score 9/10
Listen to Breathing Underwater by Hiatus Koyote

” 🌑 New Royal Moon ( // . swirl) ” by JDez 力 jdez

Jdez is an underground hip hop artist and producer whos trying to push his own rap. This beat is super relaxing and reflective, perfect for the types of lines Jdez is saying. The entire song seems to be an expression of self and search for meaning. I do have to come down on Jdez a bit- there’s nothing with rapping slowly and i dig most of the bars/your flow, but i do gotta say there was a couple of parts of the songs didn’t flow exactly quite right, like trying to cram too much into one bar. I’m similar in my rapping style at times, it can be hard to discern what was a genuine mess up and which was done on purpose, but to strive for that perfection is a good goal.
Final Score 7/10
Listen to New Royal Moon by Jdez

PK’s Picks #1 -aoi’s “1”

Welcome to the first official segment of PK’s Picks. I’m PKSkyler, and I regularly siphon through the best lesser known music I can find on the depths of the internet and bring it to you in a casual review style format. Today’s choice was emailed to me about a week ago, and I’ve had a few enjoyable listens since then. We’ll be sending our ears on a quest through a relaxing symbiosis into a new musical world with this enticing bandcamp oddity ” 1 “, the debut EP by aoi.
aoi
From what I’ve been able to gather, aoi is an independent composer, musician, and producer from Montreal,Québec. He studies molecular biology at the University of Montreal, and he also studied jazz music performance for bass guitar in the past. His debut album/EP “1” was created on his laptop over the summer and during autumn, which he released on October 22 of this year . It is experimental in genre, iinfluenced by post-rock, electronica, alternative, progressive rock, jazz and classical. I would label it along the lines of something like “electric prog?” I don’t know, but it’s good stuff, reminiscent of influences from artists like Radiohead or Pink Floyd, yet on some Scott Pilgrim style video game adventure.
We start this album off with “wavelings” a chilled out and spacey yet well structured opening instrumental. It opens with some pretty synths and guitars, which aoi increasingly adds more layers of as well as some electronic ambience. I eventually get the feeling of being in the Egyptian desert searching for an oasis, and finding illusions, yet continuing my voyage.
The next two tracks change the tone to something even more distant and far from this world. It seems we have left or are leaving Earth, or at least found lands yet undiscovered. The electronic and upbeat yet dangerous nature track 2 puts off reminds me of some tracks off the Castle Crashers OST. A relaxing, and yet foreboding sample of a woman talking enigmatically appear at the end of track 3- “the void between“, seeming to warn us of the potential perils of our journey and human nature….who is this mysterious voice? She speaks the first and only words on the album.
I personally really enjoy tracks 4 and 5. They feel like something pulled straight out of a video game set in some futuristic or at least technologically advanced setting- one with a great composer. Now that I mention it, this entire soundtrack would be fitting for a video game with its reliance of electric noises and synths in pretty much every track.
Track 6 is the first to use some piano which I really enjoyed and felt it helped close out the song and bring us to the final track masterfully which is track 7, “waltz for ioa draconis“. It has the most fitting title of any track and is in my opinion the most emotionally charged. It’s incredibly soulful and melancholy, yet stays true to its title of being well…a waltz. You feel as if you are drifting back and forth in a sense, dancing in circles, the powerful electric guitar ballad helping drive your movements and paint this picture in your mind. The album leaves us with a sense of fulfillment from our journey, yet desire for comprehension of the meaning from it.

The entire album is incredibly cohesive, relying on the previous and following tracks to help mesh together a seamless listening experience. You can also tell aoi has studied music and took care designing these songs, employing electroacoustics to his advantage. Some listeners may find qualms with the lack of any lyrical content whatsoever or what can seem to be the droning on and on nature of prog rock in general, however I personally find this EP to be relaxing and enjoyable to listen to, as well as not too distracting. It’s something you could put on while doing homework, in my opinion. That doesn’t make it boring and detract from its interesting sounds and textures though, although I can admit some listeners would be turned off by how the album was made all electronically, and goes through its variations a bit slowly. I also felt that the album performs best when listened to in one sitting, which can be seen as a negative to some as well. However all in all I would still recommend this to others and will have many more listens. I am looking forward to hearing more of what aoi will be releasing.

Final Score: 8/10

Next week I’ll be checking out another lesser known gem. Feel free to send your submissions or anything you want to check out to me or my email, PKSkyler@yahoo.com. Thanks for reading.

PKSkylerinternationalhustle.PNG
I’m Skyler Nelson, AKA PKSkyler, an experimental hip hop artist based in San Diego, CA. I’ve been into music since I was a child, seriously addicted to all kinds, but I’ve just started MAKING music seriously this year. I’ve made music before, but never thought to try and really go for it until this year. I’ve got a huge varriety of influences, so many so that there’s too many to list.
alt_art.jpg
One of my more popular songs is “Always Asleep.” The song basically is about how we wish to escape this world through things such as sleep, meditation, and perhaps otherwordly or unsavory means, and how life affects us, and how we must perserve (but its still just a chilled out rap song.). Listen to the single here

I really Enjoy SVKVRV and the Songs on it A few Personal Favorites would have to be

BORN A GHOST

https://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=2251012392/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/track=721379087/transparent=true/Born A ghost Is A very entertaining song that has a very fly Beat to it. The beat is very heavy and full of witch house style.

This beat almost reminds me of some 3 6 Mafia but with a bit of a more slowed and throwed style. I feel that the stutter hi hats are very well done and the snare compliments the hats very well.

The vocal On Born A ghost Is Slowed Down and Often repeated through out the song. The thing I like about this song is that It seams like the vocal is more then just vocals but another element to the songs and its beat.

This songs overall composition is very well done, The glitch parts that happen mid way through the song are also a good add in that keep the beat interesting and original.

LOCKED IN A BASEMENT

https://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/album=2251012392/size=large/bgcol=ffffff/linkcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/artwork=small/track=1114257993/transparent=true/

Locked In A basement is another Personal Favorite from The SVKVRV Project By Triple Blvk Dvrkness.

The song starts out with this deep droning noise that then is split by a banging kick and the beat begin’s to start.

The beat has this nice melodic flow to it that is very captivating and hypnotizing,

the Asiatic celestial melody that the drums accompany are absolutely flawless.

I find this beat to be very ethereal but yet edgy, The drum track on this song is done very well, This song has a crisp clean sound that is very well enjoyed.

Underground Vaporwave/Hip-Hop Spotlight 8/20/16: Justcallme by Nesta

Hello everyone! I’m a new writer known as PKSkyler. Today I’m going to be reviewing a track I stumbled across by an artist known as Nesta_. He seems to be hip hop and vaporwave influenced so I gravitated towards his music insantly as I love both these genres.

This song is called “Justcallme.”It is a Vaporwave track for sure and it comes off the album “Life As a Rose” and it is the final track off of Side A (the album is formatted like an old school vinyl LP.)

First I would like to say that the song follows a well established Vaporwave formula pre-set by the well known Macintosh Plus song; Use a slowed and pitched down song from the 80s that is normally relatively unknown, usually with a female singer with lyrics relating to love, and find the catchiest samples from the song.  (if you have no idea what I am talking about, look here Macintosh Plus Lisa Frank 420)
hqdefault

An objectively good Vaporwave song would follow this formula or slightly deviate from it while also keeping it’s own unique charm- ” Justcallme” does this very well. Nesta_ uses very smooth backing vocals and a looping catchy intro to set up the track’s delve into the singer’s love ballad. The song clocks in at 2:40 making it very addicting: unlike many vaporwave songs whichd rag on and on, this song’s infectious groove will make you replay it over and over. Props to Nesta, keep your eye on him!

NO Talent Collective… Why would we ever feature them??

NO Talent Collective Is A Group of musician’s that well as you guessed it have NO TALENT !!.

NO Talent Collective Is A Group of musician’s that well as you guessed it have NO TALENT !!.

There 3rd Project titled

Put Some Covers On It, It Aint Extra !!!!

let me start by saying that the No Talent Collective is a very Interesting group.

There 3rd Project Is full of covers, remakes, and remixes of fairly popular songs !!

This project is sure to have at least 1 song on it that you might enjoy !

Intro (Alberto x MMarsh – John Williams Cover)

The Intro Is very familiar and any Star wars fan will Rejoice and Praise it.

I find the Narrative to be very creative and interesting,

a bit hard to hear at times but overall this intro is very smart and hilarious.

https://whitecube169.bandcamp.com/track/intro-alberto-x-mmarsh-john-williams-cover

No Talent Collective 3 (Ell Umbra – Megamix)

I don’t really know what to say about this song Its 20 seconds of pure awesomeness that is indescribably. You need to hear it and it is a good set up for the next skit to follow

White Cube 1

White Cube 1 is A skit of white Cube In a Kfc bathroom fearing for his life.

this skit really is an ironic skit and holds the projects comedic value.

What I Got (GiGi – Sublime Cover)

This song is a personal favorite, I really enjoy this Sublime Cover and I find GiGi’s vocals to be very enjoyable. There is a few minor things that could be fixed about this cover but from my understanding this is one of the Artist 1st times recording.

the overall track is very well produced and but togather.

5 Calm (Roo – Cara Cara cover)

I really enjoy song 5. I find roo’s cover of Calm By Cara Cara to be deeply emotional and captivating. The lyrics are really enjoyable and his vocal tone is perfect for this song.

In my opinion i could see this song being worked into a hardcore song or a Nu metal song.

the beat is very hypnotic and draws you in. This is an almost perfect cover and I can not wait to hear more.

Loverboy (Pigilante – Billy Ocean Cover)

This song starts out with what sounds like an audio clip from an 1980s action movie or something, The song then starts and I am blown Away. To be completely honest I don’t think I have heard the original for this song but non the less I am blown away.

I can tell that a lot of hard work has been put into N.T.C.

The Drums in this song are unique and hit kinda heavy, The distortion on this track is very Nice And I feel adds an other layer of depth.

7 Lee 1

WHERE IS WHITE CUBE !!! Lee is still on his Journey Looking for The Cube Of Whiteness that is White Cube .

8 Living In The Sunshine (Rocky Eldritch x Ell Umbra – Tiny Tim Cover)

This song is very interesting, The vocals are very weird in this track. The vocals sound basically like a depressed Mr  Herbert.

The vocals help make this song sound bigger and more rounded and filled out as the voxals almost add to the beat

I find the beat of this song to be very banging. I enjoy the glitch and droning type aspects of this beat

9 Rasta Man is Back (PKSkyler x A Fan Who Broke Into The Recording Studio Does The Last Verse – Skrillex Karaoke )

I really enjoy this song, this is almost a perfect cover.  Rasta Man defiantly breathes life into the track. Every stoner and Skrillex / Daymien Marley fan needs to hear this song.

I find Rasta Mans flow to be very contrasting and interesting this song is perfect the entertainment value is very high. I can not Provide to much of A write up for this track As it kinda Is A skrillex Karaoke track and I don’t  want to Praise sonny More for his production work ( we all know Skrillex is an amazing producer ) but id rather give credit to Rasta Man. Rasta Man Wrote original lyrics for this cover so huge shout out’s to him for that !!

10 San Francisco (HereICome – Eskmo Cover)

I find this beat to be very entertaining and this song starts off with a nice Interesting Lil loop that captivates my attention, I find the trap type feel to this song to be perfect and gives you a bit of A dark feeling.

I could easily hear vocals or A rapper rapping over this track.

This song sounds very well mixed together and it does a very good job at keeping the listener entertained.

 11 White Cube 2

White Cube rambling about some spiritual journey, I really Hope that White Cube Is okay.

12 Going to Georgia (Christian Mikula x Dance Persina – The Mountain Goats Cover)

Ist and foremost I was not sure what to aspect with this track as it starts out with a very majestic sounding synth/ keyboard playing then slowly the track builds it self and you begin to hear other instruments, Horns, then all a suddenly BAM your thrown nicely into the mix,

The Guitar in this song is very enjoyable and I really like the folk band type feel to this song, The singers vocals are a bit rough but I feel that it adds to the depth of this song and gives it that diry punk folk rock type feel.

13 The Celibate Life (Metahoia – The Shins Cover)

Wow this song is really amazing, The guitars and drums mesh with each other perfectly.

I love the intro to this song and the little guitar riff that then set’s everything up for one amazing tune,

let me say the singer does an amazing job pulling off his screams and growls,

The guitar has a very pleasant and almost laid back melody at times,

At times I almost find this song reminding me of Joy Division but A bit harder and A mix of another band I just cant put my Finger on who, Anyway this song is very High energy and I feel could almost be Turned into something even bigger

14 Lee 2

Lee continues his journey looking for White Cube our long lost friend,

I really enjoy the vocal skits in this album they help keep the mood satirical but yet keeps you very entertaining.

15 Moonlit Knight (Acid Spongebath – Genesis Cover)

I really like the original of this song and as well as this one, the melody is very eerie, the vocals are very abstract and make you wonder what your listening to

#FREEHARVEY

16 Hanger 18 (MMarsh – Megadeth Cover)

Now this is completely awesome I remember listening to Megadeth as a child And specially hanger 18, I really love this cover, I feel that this song sounds perfect for a video game, the 8 bit synth type sound is perfect.

This song kind of sounds like my game boy glitched out and started playing Hanger 18

17 Hurt (Alberto x Ell Umbra – Nine Inch Nails Cover)

Another Personal favorite song of mine Now this is hard, I really enjoy Johnny cash cover of this song almost better then Nine Inch Nails.

I would have to say this cover is almost a good follow up to Johnny cash’s cover.

OUTRO

WHERE THE FUCKKKK IS HARVEY,

Finally we have made it to the end of this Horrific Piece of shit, And Everyone Is Freaking out about where there beloved friend white cube is, But things will be alright because the meaning of life gets exposed in this track !!

Over all I would have to say I give this Project A 9 out of 10

Pierquin and The Beards [feat. Pierquin] – Make/Shift

Make Shift is by Pierquin and The Beards.

I was sent A bit Ago that I thought would be a unique feature to have on the Experimental Gateway!.

Make Shift is by Pierquin and The Beards.

I have to say the beat is very well done and has an awesome grove to it. I really like the drum patterns and the guitar type sounds.

The vocals are very well done and the lyrical content is interesting and keeps you listening for more. This song is very trippy and has a bit of an underground feel to it.

The auto tune that Is used in this song Is very well done.

Pierquin

Is an artist on the come up you should be on the look out for he has many project that we will be looking into on The Experimental Gateway.

An Introduction to Noise !

A side Of Experimental Music the gateway has not touched on Is noise.

What is noise you might be asking well noise is a genre of music that was formed from electronic music and free improvisation I belive. Noise music is often associated with loud distorted sounds and hard to hear vocals and white noise.

Some of you are probably saying why the hell would I listen to that and some of you may be interested about hearing more about this.

Tomás Pérez

Tomás Pérez is a perfect example of a noise producer you need to check out. His band camp is filled up with all kinds of albums and tunes you should go and check out. A few of his songs that have caught my attention and I think would be good to take a look at are.

catharsis (intro) of his VORTEX EP 渦

Xass 3 from his Rerum Project with apisdafry

8 bit madness part 2 from his 8 BIT MADNESS project

catharsis (intro)

Catharsis has a very nice ambient droning feel to it that has some sort of chanting in the background that makes you feel like your at a monk ritual. the ambiance in this song makes it sound like it came straight out of a movie’s backing sound track.

I feel that a lot of Tomás Pérez Music would be perfect as samples and this is a perfect example of that !.

Xass 3

xass 3 is a very synth type 8 bit sounding noise type song , I again think that if you are a producer Tomás Pérez is deft someone to look into for sampling. This track is very amazing and i really enjoy it The Rerum Project was very interesting and a very good combination of style

https://tomas-perez.bandcamp.com/track/xass-3

8 BIT MADNESS

8 bit Madness is possibly one of my favorite projects by Tomás Pérez

this project is very old school video game sounding and there are some really good parts in the overall album that had me lost in a drift of sounds and thoughts.

pleeps and wubs. I really love this project and think that Tomas Perez should Add a bit more 8 bit into his Noise projects 🙂
